THE CONTOON

Everytime I think I've uncovered everything there is to know about this convention something else turns up. Ken Slater kept a couple of cartoon panels from the con, drawn by Ken McIntyre, that would have been mounted on a wall. Earlier this month (December 2024) I was sent photos of these by Ken Slater's daughter Susie. However, this is not mentioned in any con report, nor does it show up in the background of any of the many photos taken at the con. Which leads me to suspect that while it may have been produced for the 1957 Worldcon it was never actually displayed at that event. It was however included among the exhibits at CYTRICON V in 2008.

I assume this is the first time McIntyre produced one of these, but it wouldn't be the last. The 1959 UK national convention saw the appearance of 'The First BSFA Contoon' (see below). They now had a name, but whether he produced anymore is unknown.
